I went to visit one of my favorite torrent sites today, Demonoid, but the page wouldn't load at all. I tried different iterations of their domain name like demonoid.com, demonoid.me and demonoid.ph, but nothing worked. I decided to Google 'Demonoid' and it turns out it's down hard.
Apparently they have been the victims of a massive DDOS attack last week, but now that it's been a few days, they are still down. According to ZDNet:
It turned out, according to a statement supplied to TorrentFreak, that Demonoid had been taken down by a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The site's administrator reportedly said the fix could take a while, and so the waiting game began. A full week passed, and then last night, the server was turned off completely and the site started serving up a 404 (Not Found error message).
A fake Facebook Page for the Demonoid website said the website was taken down on purpose to work on fixing the issues. I fell for the hoax earlier today and after it was pointed out to me, I immediately tried to contact Demonoid's administrator for a statement explaining what is really happening.
Torrent Freak is reporting that not only is the site down, but the domain entries have been changed to point the sites to malicious ad pages. From Torrent Freak:
On July 1 and then again today Aug 2, the domain entries for Demonoid.me were updated and now the URL is redirecting to straight to adverts. Unfortunately – and we presume this is something Demonoid’s admin would be completely against – some of those adverts contain a virus and other malware.
Neither ZDNet or Torrent Freak have been able to contact the Demonoid admins to get a clear picture of what is going on. All we can do now is wait to see what will happen to Demonoid.
