Nice! Homebrew Apps For The Palm Pre!

Okay, forget what I said yesterday about not having too many apps for the Palm Pre. About ten minutes after writing that post, I happened upon the PreCentral Homebrew channel! Now, they certainly don’t have as many apps as the iPhone, or Blackberry Storm yet, but the app pool is getting deeper and deeper!

The best part, in my opinion about it is that in order to use these Homebrew apps, you must first put your phone into dev mode. To do that do the following:

  • From card view type the following without quotes:

          “upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart”

  • You will see an icon pop up to enter development mode. Touch that, and enable development mode. Your Pre will need to restart.

Here is a video that better explains it:

Contra anyone?

contra nintendo

Anyway, after that little bit of geeky awesomeness, you can download the WebOS Quick Install tool from PreCentral.net

webosquickinstall

Once installed, you can easily install any one of 140+ Homebrew apps from PreCentral.net as well as any other sites that pop up!

Getting Adobe Air To Work In Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bit

Today I have a good post for you! I recently decided to make Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit edition my operating system for my work computer. I figured why not, the dual monitors thing works pretty good in Jaunty Jackelope without too much finagling.

So I go ahead and install it. Now I am finally using a 64 bit operating system for work! So what's the problem? Well, on my Windows XP installation I had Adobe Air installed so I could use my favorite Twitter client Twhirl. The problem is that Adobe air isn't really made for 64 bit operating systems quite yet, so i had to install some dependencies. Here comes yet another problem.

Most of the tutorials I found mentioned getting the getlibs-all.deb package from a site called boundlesssupremacy.com, but it looks like that site is gone now. I did finally find it though which is good news for you! Also, in some of the tutorials, they talk about some other dependencies you need. I decided to put them all in a nice script for easy installation! Follow these simple instructions and you'll have Adobe Air running on Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit in no time!

  1. Download my shell script: air-lib.sh
  2. Download Adobe Air from here: http://get.adobe.com/air
  3. Open a terminal and cd into the directory where you downloaded the items from 1 and 2
  4. Make the two items executable

    >chmod +x air-lib.sh
    >chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

  5. Run my script

    >sudo ./air-lib.sh

  6. Install Adobe Air

    >sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

After that you are done, and you should be able to install and run your Adobe Air programs like Twhirl and Tweedeck without issues.

Are you using Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bit? What applications are you having problems with? Got any tips or suggestions? Perhaps some blog posts of your own? Post your links in the comments!

Bauer-Puntu 9.04 – Now With More Hackability!

Sorry it took so long, but it is finally out! The latest and quite possibly the LAST edition of Bauer-Puntu linux available. I say the last because it is rather a pain in the arse to produce this. Not to mention my wife hates when I work on projects like this because it takes my time away from the family.

I am pretty excited about this release though. I have been playing with it for the last few days. I installed mine with the ext4 format, and I am simply loving the performance, and fast boot times!

Anyway, enough about that! So what is new in the version? Of course you have all the awesomeness from the latest Ubuntu release including:

  • GNOME 2.26Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackelope
  • X.Org server 1.6
  • Wacom tablet hotplugging
  • New style for notifications
  • Boot performance
  • Linux kernel 2.6.28
  • Ext4 filesystem support

With that I have pre-installed some really cool hacking, and security tools. My old security teacher in College once said my distro didn’t have enough security tools. This time I went ahead and put a few more on there. Some of the tools I pre-installed are:

  • kismettux.bauer-power
  • aircrack-ng
  • Metasploit Framework 3.2
  • Wireshark
  • packETH
  • SQLNinja
  • Fast-Track
  • ettercap-ng
  • nmap
  • nessus
  • netcat
  • hping2
  • John The Ripper
  • dsniff
  • scapy
  • p0f
  • ntop
  • ike-scan

I think that is it. There may be one or two that I am missing (It was late when I was installing them all).

Besides the security tools, I have also pre-installed Adobe Flash, and Adobe Air. With Adobe Air, I have also Pre-installed the Twhirl Twitter client for you Twitter freaks like me!

Since I packed in all of the extra tools, I tried my damnedest to make it fit on a CD. Well, I just couldn’t do it. I even uninstalled all of the games, and office programs (You will have to re-install those later). With everything that is on it, the Live iso is just over 700MB. Because of that I thought the best thing to do would be to make a Live USB image available, so that is what I did. You can still download the iso if you want to install Bauer-Puntu in VMWare or something, but if you are just using it as a Live CD, then it is best to put on a USB stick anyway for mobility.

You can download the iso here: (Bauer-Puntu 9.04 ISO)

You can download the USB img here: (Bauer-Puntu 9.04 USB)

To install the USB image, follow the instructions for installing the Ubuntu NBR release to USB here: (NBR to USB)

NOTE: The Win32 Disk Imager utility may cause the Live USB not to login. I recommend using the flashnul command line utility instead if you are using Windows to make your bootable live USB stick.

Of course all of this comes without the shit brown that plagues Ubuntu!

Here are the screen shots!

Like I said above. This most likely will be my last release. That is, unless there is a high demand for it. The last release was downloaded a few thousand times, so who knows. Maybe there will be demand.

If you use, or have used Bauer-Puntu in the past, let me know how you like it. I want your feedback and suggestions as well. Hit me up in the comments!

Ubuntu n00b? Here's A Free Ubuntu Pocket Guide!

A lot of you out there subscribe to Bauer-Power because you are fellow Ubuntu users, and like hearing about cool Ubuntu tips, tricks, and other geeky Linux goodness. Many of you are Linux n00bs, and that is okay. You have to start somewhere right?

For those of you just dipping your big toes into the big Linuxy pond of Ubuntu there are lots of cool, free resources available online to help you learn the ways of Ubuntu. Just like Bauer-Power, there are other groups that strive to help out Linux n00bs.

One such guy went above and beyond in my opinion. A man by the name of Keir Thomas wrote a pocket guide for Ubuntu, and made it freely available for download online! The book is called "Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference."

Here is a direct download link: (UPG&R Download)

For those of you who prefer not to download PDF's, and would rather just purchase a book, the book is also available to purchase for the nominal price of $11.99 here: (Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference Purchase)

Seriously though, how cool is that? How many free manuals are there for Windows? I may be wrong, but there probably aren't any (If there are let me know in the comments). Know of any other free linux manuals for say, Gentoo, Fedora, Suse etc? Let us know in the comments!

Where Can I Find A Windows 7 Download?

As you may know, Microsoft put the kibosh on the downloading of the beta version for their new operating system Windows 7 earlier this week. You can still get a serial for it, but if you haven't downloaded it yet, it doesn't really do you any good does it?

Maybe it does! You see, your good buddy El Di Pablo found himself a good quality torrent version of Windows 7 (32 bit version)! I have downloaded it myself and have verified that it is definitely a working version of their beta OS!

Download Windows 7 Beta 1 Build 7022
[Password is B@u3rP0w3r]

How many of you out there have tried it already? I am hearing some really good things about it. From what I am hearing Windows 7 is to Vista what Windows XP Home edition was for Windows ME. I am still playing with it myself.

If you haven't downloaded it yet, download it from the link above. Play with it, and let me know what you think in the comments! If you have played with it already, I want to hear from you too!

By the way, if you came here from Google, please give this result an up vote ;-)

Why do companies feel the need to do that? I mean really, you have already sold us a $400 PDA phone! You have already sold my company Blackberry Enterprise Server, and have already sold us over a hundred licenses! What more can you possible use my form information for to sell me? Have you not sold us enough?

For crying out loud!

Re-Calibrating uTorrent For Maximum Download Speeds

For many, this is pretty basic stuff, –even common sense. For others, not so much. First of all, determine whether or not you’ll need to set up port forwarding for your connection to remain stable and useful. In essence, find out whether or not you’re on a router. Or just open uTorrent real quick; look at the bottom of the window.

There should be small chambers along the bottom: DHT: (nodes); a symbol indicating your connection status; D: downloading stats; U: uploading stats. Double click the symbol indicating your connection status, –if it’s a green check mark, you don’t need port forwarding.

Otherwise, double click, and then click the button on the pop up that says “Test if port is forwarded properly”. Your browser will open to a window or tab that states your IP and what the status of your port is. It will plainly tell you if your port is not correctly forwarded or if it is. If it isn’t, check out Portforward.com, –they give step by step tutorials for even the worst techno-tard.

Once your port is correctly forwarded, or if it already is, follow these steps to make uTorrent download at the best speeds:

  • Bauer TorrentOpen uTorrent -> Options -> Preferences -> Bandwidth
  • Set Maximum Upload Rate to 20 kbp/s
  • Set Maximum Download Rate to 0 (unlimited)
  • Set Global Maximum Number of Connections to 800
  • Set Global Maximum Number of Peers Connected Per Torrent to 125
  • Set Maximum Number of Upload Slots Per Torrent to 25
  • Click Apply -. OK

And you’re all set!

Bauer-Puntu 8.10 Released!

Okay, sorry this one was a little late getting out. This version was a little harder to create than the last version. For one, I don't know if you have noticed this, but it is nearly impossible to change the usplash theme in Ubuntu 8.10. Not sure what is up with that, but is a royal pain in my arse! I hate the default splash in Ubuntu!

For this version, I had to remove usplash and switch on over to the easier to use and configure splashy. Of course that caused some issues of its own which I finally ironed out, but still...

For instance, if you decide you want to install Bauer-Puntu, that is fine. It will work, you just have to remember to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst after the install to get the splashy splash screen to work. What you need to do is edit your kernel line to add vga=791. For example, find the line that says something like:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=3dca6051-5877-438c-94c5-f5ff7803d851 ro quiet splash

and add vga=791 at the end of it so it reads:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=3dca6051-5877-438c-94c5-f5ff7803d851 ro quiet splash vga=791

After you are done, from the terminal run:

sudo update-grub

After the reboot, splashy will be working again. No big woop ;-)

Anyway, enough about that, here is the download link:

Download Bauer-Puntu

This version is just under 650MB, so you can stick it on a CD! Now it really is a Live CD!

Hurray!

I removed all of the games, as well as Evolution and OpenOffice. You will just have to add those back later.

In their place though I added some cool pentesting tools for some hacking goodness. Install Bauer-Puntu to a USB stick, or just carry it around on CD (It is a Live CD after all) and you have some mobile hackability!

The tools I installed are:

  • kismet
  • aircrack-ng
  • ettercap-ng
  • nmap
  • Wireshark
  • Metasploit Framework 3.1
Here are some screen shots:

Looking for more games in Ubuntu? Meet Playdeb Beta!

I was browsing Digg the other day and there was a post on "Ten reasons Ubuntu will never beat Windows" or some nonsense. Obviously it was front page material because it caused such a frenzy. The thing that caught my eye though wasn't the article itself, but one of the Digg comments.

The commenter said that Ubuntu, or any other Linux platform, would never beat Windows because there are no games for it.To that guy... I beg to differ.

There are actually tons of games out there for Linux, you just have to know where to get them. Sure, many of these games, since they are free and have no financial backing, cannot meet the graphics levels of some of the more popular PC games, and console games out now. To that I will concede. Some of them though are pretty damned good, and most importantly, they are FREE!

Bauer-Power Linux TuxYou can always browse synaptic package manager in Ubuntu to find a few extra simple games to add to your desktop, but if you want more you have to go elsewhere. I am making the search a little more simple for you today, because I am going to tell you where to get some games!

Its a little place called Playdeb Beta. All you have to do to get access to tons and tons of Linux games is install the package (Instructions are on their website).

Some of the games in their lineup are:

  • Alien Arena 2007 7.10
  • AssaultCube 0.93
  • Glest 3.1.2
  • GridWars 2 2006 03 09
  • Nexuiz 2.4.2
  • OpenArena 0.8.0

That is just a minuscule sampling too! If you are a gamer, and especially a cheap bastard that doesn't like to pay for expensive, mainstream games, then you should definitely check out Playdeb Beta.

Do you play open source games? What are some of the games you are playing? Let us know in the comments!

Quick Wipe Hard Drive's Using Lysol

Have you ever needed to quickly blank a hard drive? Now I'm not talking about for security purposes, for that I like using DBAN. No I'm just talking about one quick wipe down to erase the drive? I do, especially when I really want to test a disk image. I want no previous instances of anything on the drive, to really be sure my image is perfect.

Well, at my school they have a really old, yet effective program, called Lysol. I tried Googling it, and I couldn't find any place to download it. I did find some forums where people mentioned it, but no place for download. Well, it's time to rectify that! I obtained a CD ISO of the program, and I am making it available for everyone here!

Lysol Hard DriveLysol is pretty friggin' awesome. It will wipe a drive in about 5 seconds! That's right, only 5 seconds! (like I said, this is not good for security wipes). The iso itself is less than 3MB in size. It is small, but very effective. Now if you or your friends are looking for a quick disk wiper, then send them on over here to Bauer-Power!

[EDIT 6/5/2008] - You know I was just thinking today that this could be very useful if you already used full hard disk encryption. Lets say you have a fully encrypted laptop with all sorts of illegal downloads or whatever. If the FBI busts in with a warrant, you might be forced to give up the password to decrypt the drive. Now, if you had a few minutes you could possibly pop in this sucka, and do a quick wipe. The quick format, mixed with the disk encryption would probably make it impossible to recover anything. I don't know, just a thought. What's your opinion? Hit me up in the comments.

Time To Get Your Geek On All Over Again: Ubuntu 8.04 is Here!

So Happy Its Thursday boys and girls! Even happier because today is the release date for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)! I always get that warm sensation inside when a new release of Ubuntu comes out. It is much like the feeling of a warm blanket your momma wraps around you to make you a little more comfortable. Okay, maybe not, but its still pretty cool.

I think a lot of you must feel the same way, or at least in a very similar fashion. I have had a poll going for a while on which Linux distribution was your favorite, and what did you guys say? You know it! Ubuntu won by a landslide! Here is a screen shot of the results:

Ubuntu Poll
So whats new in tis version of Ubuntu? Why should you download it, or upgrade to it? Here are some of the new changes:

  • Ubuntu worldOpenOffice.org database, Java, equation editor support removed from install CD to save disk space. Can be re-installed later through synaptic.
  • iSCSI partitions is now maintained
  • Route metrics - ifupdown now sets the default route metric to 100 for interfaces with no metric option
  • Network Manager only manages interfaces that are marked for roaming.
  • NFS mount support not installed by default. To use it, you must install the nfs-common package
  • /bin/sh is now dash
  • PowerPC and SPARC moved to ports.ubuntu.com, and no longer supported by Canonical.
  • Commercial/partner repository is called:
    deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner

A full more detailed list of changes can be found here in the release notes: (Ubuntu Release Notes)

So what are you waiting for? Get your Hardy Heron on now! (Download Ubuntu 8.04)

If you already use a previous version of Ubuntu, you can upgrade over the interweb. Click here for instructions on upgrading: (Ubuntu 8.04 Upgrade Instructions).

Youtube to Mpeg Direct

A few months ago I posted an article on one method to download your favorite Youtube video's, and then convert them to mpeg. That was just too long of a process for me. I'm an American, and we like things quick, easy and convenient. Why do you thing there are McDonalds and Starbucks on every street corner here?

Anyway, there are many online websites that convert Youtube, Metacafe, Break, Google Video, etc to mpeg and let you download them directly. One of them I found via Propeller is called http://vixy.net. This lets you download directly to MPG, AVI, MOV, MP4, 3GP etc all online.

Another cool program I found on Softpedia, is called Save2PC Light. I actually like this better than the online one. The online downloader seemed to take way too long converting the videos from flv format to mpeg. Save2PC downloaded the video I wanted in only a few seconds.

My previous method was a two part process of downloading the flv file, then using another program to convert flv to mpeg. Way too long in my opinion. Using either the online method from Vixy, or installing Save2PC Light can save you time when snagging video clips from your favorite websites.

Get Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC1

Hello everyone, I hope you had a good holiday weekend, didn't eat too much turkey, and survived black Friday. I know personally I am now at least 20lbs heavier (Damn my wife is a good cook!)

Anyway, I found this cool registry hack to make Windows XP Service pack 3 available in Windows Update. Full credit is due to DailyApps.net where I found this script, which you can download here: (Windows XP SP3 Hack)

The script deletes an old Windows update registry key, then ads a key option for the the latest release candidate.

From DailyApps:

Please note this hack is the exact way Microsoft expects its beta testers to try Windows XP SP3 out, so you don’t have to worry too much about Microsoft catching hold of you.

Just download it, run the script, and check online for windows updates. If you don't see the option for Service Pack 3, reboot once and try it again. Let me know how it turns out for you in the comments!.

Can I Turn a Computer on Remotely?

Some times people ask me if there is a way to remotely power on a computer for one reason or another. Of course I tell them yes there is, and this feature is called Wake On LAN ("WOL"). Usually, these people aren't tech savvy so after I tell them that I get a blank stare or two. So let me tell you what WOL is.

According to Wikipedia:

"Wake on LAN (WOL, sometimes WoL) is an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a shut-down computer to be booted remotely."

Sweet! Now we know what it is how do we do it? It is actually pretty easy. First you need a NIC (Network Interface Card) that supports WOL, and you need a motherboard with BIOS that support WOL. The good news is that most modern day NIC's and Motherboards support WOL, you just have to be sure that it is turned on in the BIOS. A lot of Motherboard manufacturers turn it off by default as a security feature.

Now that it is turned on, we need a program that will do it. WOL is not a built in command or program in Windows or Linux, you need a utility to do this. The good news is there are a plethora of tools out there. One for Linux is aptly named ETHERWAKE (sudo apt-get install etherwake wakeonlan for Ubuntu). There are some other configurations you need to make this work in Linux, which I will let you Google yourself. For this post I will mainly concentrate on Windows.

In Windows there are a bunch of tools, one I found that I like is called MC-WOL. The reason I like this one, and once again there are many like it, is because this lets you wake up computers that are on a different network. Some tools will only work on the same network you are on so be sure to look at all of the features and plan out exactly what you need. The good thing about MC-WOL is it works on both your local network, and across other networks.

So now we have our tool, the only thing we need it the MAC address of the computer we want to turn on, and if it is on a different subnet or network, we will also need the IP address of the target computer, or broadcast address for that network (If you use DHCP and the IP addresses changes). Can anybody tell me why we need both a MAC and an IP Adress if going across different networks? I will give you four guess and the first three don't count! The reason for this is WOL operates at layer 2 of the OSI model which requires MAC addresses, but in order to be routed to another network, we need logical addressing which operates at layer 3 of the OSI model. Anyhoo, enough about that.

So, to get the MAC address of our target computer you can simply run ipconfig /all, and write down the HEX number for your network card (Hint, it is called physical address). You will also get the IP address, and subnet mask of that computer using that as well (write it down). With the IP address and subnet mask, you should be able to identify the broadcast address pretty easily by using a subnet calculator. If the computer is set to static, all you need is the IP address.

Now with that information we are ready to test it out. Turn off that target computer, and run the following command from command line (Remember to change the information for your machine, e.g. your target MAC and IP):

MC-WOL 00:01:02:58:A3:C7 /a 172.16.1.125

To do this using the broadcast address for the network you would use:

MC-WOL 00:01:02:58:A3:C7 /a 172.16.1.255

If you did everything correctly, your computer should now be turning on!
