Bauer-Power Episode 10

Can you believe it? Sundance and I have finally made it to episode 10! I bet you wished we would have quit after episode 1, but oh no, we kept going!

In this episode we address some criticism and suggestions about our previous episodes, and also try to draw comparisons between all the different episodes up until now. We also show you where you can create your own awesome free soundboards, as well as cool geeky cube figures to spruce up your office. We also try to take you into a typical day at the help desk and finally discuss the removal of the shout feature from digg.com. Here it is, Episode 10!

I know in the video we mention not finding a cool video editor, but over the weekend I obtained a copy of Adobe Premier Elements 7. Let me tell you what, this bad boy has all of the ease of use of Windows Movie Maker, but way more power! It has multiple audio and video layers, more special effects and transitions, and is all around a way better video editor. I can't wait until we have a better camera, because that with this new software will make one hell of a show! The only thing we will be missing is decent writing!

Sundance Gets a Mention on Diggnation!

As many of you know, earlier this year Sundance and I made new years resolutions to become power diggers on Digg.com. We succeeded, and actually were able to get quite a few articles to the front page. Our only problem? We couldn't get anything of our own to the front page.

We started off submitting cool stuff we found, and worked with others in our networks to drive some stuff to the front page. Our goal of course was to get consistent at that, then we should be able to drive our own stuff to the front page. Well, it turns out that it doesn't work that way. Digg's algorithm works pretty hard to prevent stuff like that from happening.

Anyway, enough rambling about that, and back to the point. The point is that one of Sundance's submissions not only went front page, but was also popular enough to make it on Diggnation!

I told Sundance that if one of his submissions made it on Diggnation, that I would re-post it here on Bauer-Power! Here it is, Sundance's (Popflyking) mention on Diggnation!

Cool Digg Feature For Wannabe Power Diggers

On Saturday I noticed a pretty cool little feature when I was getting ready to send a shout burst out to my network of power diggers. This little feature is pretty awesome if you don't want to be "that guy" that over shouts on Digg. You know, the annoying guy.

This new feature (At least, it is the first time I noticed it) allows you to only shout to those of your friends have still not dugg your article. This way if your good Digg friends have already dugg your story, you can keep drilling down on your list until they have all participated. Check out this screen shot I took:

As you can see, from the drop down menu, you can select the option to shout only to those "not dugg". Pretty convenient if you ask me :-)

If after a few passes, you start noticing a trend of deadbeats, you can go ahead and use this tool I mentioned last week to help you clean up your friends! Happy power digging!

[Edit] - I am such an idiot sometimes! Someone pointed out that this is a script. Me being the upstanding Digg user I am, and not wanting to violate TOS, I have figured out what caused this, and disabled it. Cleaning Up Your Digg Friends

I have been really, really, really active on Digg lately. I haven't been submitting posts from Bauer-Power, but I have been submitting stuff. Various things that I think are cool from around the web. Trying to get stuff to the front page. You know, that old chestnut.

I have been fairly successful. Sundance and I have created a small Digg army, and are trying to follow the advice of this once powerful powerdigger: (How I became a Digg Power User...)

So far I have a 2% popularity ratio (Kind of pathetic, but better than most) and Sundance has an amazing 25% popularity ratio which is outstanding!

Anyway, one of the things we have both been trying to do is to keep our Digg friends list clean. By clean I mean remove the people who aren't helping you. Trimming the fat if you will. The people that shout your ear off, and don't Digg anything in return.

A friend on Digg actually told me about this site to help you find who in your friends are Digging your stuff so you can remove the deadbeats that aren't. It's is called DiggStatistics.com. Now, I should warn you that it was flagged as being potentially harmful:

When I went to the site, I didn't find any problems with it, and it did not appear to have downloaded anything. I think it is fairly safe, but please proceed with caution.

Anyway, that site is awesome! It showed me that of my 500 friends, only 250 or so of them were actually digging my stuff! Of those friends it broke down who was digging my stuff the most!

Pretty cool site if you are looking to make quality friends on Digg. Friends that can help you get your stuff to the front page, and who you can help get their stuff to the front page!

Some Things To Know About Digg's Shout Feature

I have a lot of friends on digg. Sure some of you may have way more than me, and if so that is great. The purpose of this post isn't to measure who has more friends. This isn't MySpace after all.

One thing about having a lot of friends on digg is it give you the ability to get the items you are submitting in front of more eyes, and in doing so you get more diggs. If you have a lot of friends and they all digg your submission it can give it the momentum it needs to get to the front page.

The best way of letting your friends know about your new submissions is the digg shout it feature. It allows you to post something new, then tell your friends about it and ask them to digg it for you if they like it. The problem with it is that it can be abused. To combat what digg has deemed "shout spam" digg put some limitations on the shout feature. These limitations are something you need to know.

• The first thing you should know is that you are limited to 20 shouts at one time. Have you wondered why you have 300 friends, but the "shout to all" button never works? That is because you can only shout in 20 person bursts.


• The second thing you should know is you can only shout to a maximum of 60 people before you get the error message telling you to slow down. Now this maximum is not set on a per day basis. You just have to wait an hour or so before sending more shouts out. Make sure you keep track of who you send shouts too because I hate duplicates!


• The last thing I wanted to make sure everyone knows is that the shout button IS NOT BROKEN! What I mean by that is when you select 20 of your friends to shout to, and you type in your little, "digg me" message then hit shout it takes sometimes 30 or 40 seconds to send it. Sure digg needs to do something to fix it, but it is not broken per se. Patience is key! I just spent all morning catching up on shouts and I am sure half of them were duplicates because people were getting impatient so they hit the send button a couple of times. JUST HIT IT ONCE!

I love Digg! I guess you can say that I Digg Digg. One of the reasons I love Digg is that it brings a fairly steady flow of traffic to Bauer-Power. I also like it because it is a great place to discover new things and stay current. Finally I like it for the community. Sure, many Digger's are flippin' a-holes, but for the most part I enjoy reading comments because there are some really funny people on Digg.

Who Would Have Thought Technology Could Be So Hot?

While milling around on Digg today I found an upcoming post about a new WEB 2.0 site aimed at...get this...digging on the hottest looking tech girls out there. It really isn't that there is a site for voting up the prettiest girls that amazes me though. Nope, what amazes me is there are actually really hot tech girls out there!

Lets be honest here for a minute. The computer industry really isn't known for its beauty. Actually it is quite the opposite. We are known for wearing high waters, tape on our glasses and pocket protectors. (Don't you just love stereotypes?)

Well, this site called DigATechGirl.com is breaking that stereotypical mold. Hurry up and check it out, because if you look at their "About Us" page, you will see that it is only a matter of time before Digg.com threatens to sue them.

Adding Digg Buttons to Blog Posts

I found this little article on how to add the digg buttons to all of my posts. As you can see, there are buttons in the upper left of all my posts. The reason i can do it is thanks to this blog I found while searching Google. If you are a blog writer, and like to use digg to generate traffic to your posts, you should check out this very well written "how-to" on adding the digg button!
