Installing ASP.NET on Windows XP

One would think that if they have .NET installed on their computer and they install the IIS that would be all you have to do.

Well as with many things that should be that easy it's not. But it is easy to fix.

  1. Click Start then Run.
  2. Type CMD and hit Ok.
  3. Navigate to your Microsoft .NET windows directory which is usually C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
  4. Run the following commands aspnet_regiis -i and aspnet_regiis -c
  5. Load up your IIS Manager and enable ASP.NET on the site you want.

Setup a simple VPN server using Windows XP on the easy!

A few days ago I mentioned how I used OpenVPN to setup a secure VPN server to my home network. I loved that solution because the possibilities are endless, and it is extremely expandable with no limitations because it is open source.

What if you don't need anything that fancy because you only have one or two computers at home? Did you know you can setup your home Windows XP Pro box to be a simple PPTP VPN server? Sure, PPTP isn't as secure as SSL, but it is better than a sharp stick in the eye, and it is sure convenient as hell!

Well, the boys over at Hak.5 decided to do a quick spot on just how easy it is to turn your XP box into a VPN server. All you need to get it working is the following video, and enable port forwarding on your router for port 1723 (PPTP) to point to your new Windows XP VPN server. Don't believe how easy it is? Check out the video (Via 5Min.com):

Do you have something like this setup at home? Do you use something else for a VPN/remote solution? Care to share with the rest of the class in the comments?

Turn Windows XP Into Vista: Part Deux

A few months ago I wrote about a skin package to make Windows XP look just like Vista. That package changed everything from the boot screen to the gadget bar to give Windows XP just as much eye candy as Windows Vista. Well, almost. It still didn't offer the 3-D desktop that Vista offers.

No problemo, there is a utility that will give you the Vista 3D desktop option in Windows XP. It is called Winflip, and is absolutely free (Hey that rhymes). It allows you to display all of your open windows in a 3D way that looks just like the way Windows Vista does it.

There have been lots of articles written about it lately. This comment is taken from Free Download A Day:

WinFlip adds an interesting dimension to task switching. Rather than just using Alt + Tab to move through your open windows, it displays all your currently open application windows in a 3-D stack on your desktop. To change to a different window, you can use your mouse or keyboard to choose the desired application window. You can configure the look to use large or small images for your windows, and its relatively small footprint means that you won't bog your system down for just the aesthetics.

If you are still on a quest to have the Vista experience without the Vista crapiness, then Winflip is another application you can add to your arsenal.

When Windows XP SP3 Update Fails

Hello readers! If you have been hanging around the last few days you know that I recently posted an article about how to get Service Pack 3 RC1 for Windows XP. I'm sure that 98% of you had no problems at all with the install.

If you are like me though and like to customize your Windows XP box, you may have had problems. What I like to do is install Style XP on my computer and use a custom boot screen. (My favorite is my own Bauer-Power boot screen). When you do that, Style XP backs up the original Windows kernel file, and sets up their own custom one so you can use a custom boot screen.

Well, if you do that, or something similar, when you do your Windows update to get Windows XP Service Pack 3, Microsoft checks to make sure that you don't have any modified system files that may cause the install to fail, or jack up your computer. The error I got was:

Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x8007F0CC
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.

For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for issues related to getting updates)

To fix it I had to go into Style XP's bootscreen options and reset the kernel file, and boot.ini file and reboot once. After that the install was smooth.

If you don't have Style XP, but your files are modified, you might want to try system file checker, or run the repair installation from the Windows XP CD before upgrading to Service Pack 3.

Has anyone else out there had problems with WinXP SP3? Hit me up in the comments.

Get Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC1

Hello everyone, I hope you had a good holiday weekend, didn't eat too much turkey, and survived black Friday. I know personally I am now at least 20lbs heavier (Damn my wife is a good cook!)

Anyway, I found this cool registry hack to make Windows XP Service pack 3 available in Windows Update. Full credit is due to DailyApps.net where I found this script, which you can download here: (Windows XP SP3 Hack)

The script deletes an old Windows update registry key, then ads a key option for the the latest release candidate.

From DailyApps:

Please note this hack is the exact way Microsoft expects its beta testers to try Windows XP SP3 out, so you don’t have to worry too much about Microsoft catching hold of you.

Just download it, run the script, and check online for windows updates. If you don't see the option for Service Pack 3, reboot once and try it again. Let me know how it turns out for you in the comments!.
